Yes, it’s that time of year again – time for the 25th annual Eddie Aikau surfing contest sponsored by Quicksilver in memory of the late Eddie Aikau.
While the surf is currently triple-overhead with 18′ sets and good conditions, it’s just not quite big enough for the biggest of the big wave-ridding events which requires waves of at least 25′ to begin the contest!
You can get live streaming video of the contest as well as text alerts and updates by going to the official Eddie Aikau site here…

Here’s an adorable story about s surfing pooch named Ricochet who was raised to be a service dog and discovered she loved the water and has terrific balance!
Now she’s part of the San Diego Dog Surfing Association and has her own website called Rip Curl Ricki.
When not out surfing for fun, Ricochet, (or Ricki for short), surfs with Patrick, her fifteen year-old quadriplegic surfing partner.
We here at Buy Board Shorts thought this was too cute not to share… maybe we should consider a line of boardshorts for dogs!!

We here at Buy Board Shorts want to send our congrats out to Brazilian junior pro surfer Jadson Andre who won the Oakley Rio Pro Junior event this past Sunday in Rio de Janeiro. The contest started last Friday and finished up in clean, 2-3′ surf at at Arpoador Beach.
Andre scored the only perfect 10 point ride of the entire event and won the final round over his good friend Miguel Pupo. Both surfers are guaranteed spots into the Billabong ASP World Junior Championships in Australia in January, 2010.
“We made it quite a heat, each one taking some waves and when I want so much something, it happens. I’m stoked for it. Me and Miguel (Pupo) are brothers and when he was at the peak, I waited in the middle and when I was with the priority he waited, so who surfed better would win the heat” said Andre… way to go… and nice boardshorts you got on there too!

Hotelier Andre Balazs who runs the ultra-hip Standard chain of hotels has sparked some buzz with one of his new marketing gimmicks: selling bikinis and boardshorts in poolside vending machines!
Of course we here at Buy Board Shorts think this a a brilliant marketing idea and only wish we could afford to put vending machines with our board shorts and swim shorts in them at every pool in the country.

Here at Buy Board Shorts we get lots of emails from our customers and felt that one question we recently received was worthy of answering here in our boardshorts blog: “Should guys wear boxers under their mens board shorts?”
The answer is unequivocally, No!.
Let’s say it again just to be sure you all hear us: NO – guys, (and gals for that matter), should NOT wear underwear while wearing boardshorts!!
We hear some dudes claim that they wear boxers to prevent a rash, or that boxers feel more comfortable, or whatever. This is B.S.!
Think about it for a minute… who wants wet, waded up cotton hugging their parts instead of the free-and-easy, quick drying feel of boardshorts letting everything air out quickly and painlessly? Maybe YOU want to walk around in dry board shorts and wet boxers that will eventually dry into stiff cardboard with sand and salt in them, but WE sure don’t!!
Glad we could answer that one for ya – keep the cards and letters coming, folks.

Looks like the beach isn’t the only place boardshorts are showing up: last week they were seen parading down the catwalk at Fashion Week in New York in the G-Star Raw show.
While not as ‘traditional’ as one might think about boardshorts, they were none the less on stage in a venue you would never think they would be!
We here at Buy-Board-Shorts love to see men’s and women’s boardshorts break the traditional beach and surfer mold and into mainstream fashion. That’s because we wear our boardshorts and swim shorts EVERYWHERE.

Our friends over at Environmental Working Group, (EWG), have put out their list of the safety and effectiveness rankings of over 1,000 sunscreens and guess what… the results for the leading sunscreens from name brands like Coppertone, Banana Boat, and Neutrogena, were not pretty.
They found that 3 out of 5 offer inadequate protection from the sun or actually contain toxic ingredients. They discovered that 42% of tested sunscreens still contained the chemical oxybenzone, shown in laboratory tests to disrupt the endocrine system and release reactive oxygen species that could contribute to skin cancer.
When our customers buy a pair of board shorts from us and head out for some fun in the sun, we want to be sure they are safe and armed with knowledge so they can make the best and most informed decision about their sunscreen! That’s why we’d like to pass along our own recommendation for an all natural, biodegradable mineral sunblock that our staff members have actually used: Mexitan Sunscreen.
The Mexitan line of sunblocks use all natural ingredients including the mineral zinc and titanium to block the harmful UVA and UVB rays of the sun. PLUS they got very high marks from the EWG and are in their list of top 10 sunscreens!
You can read the EWG report here.
You can buy Mexitan suntan lotion here.

The folks at the AVP, the professional beach volleyball league, know that the first key to drawing a crowd in this economic environment is to get people to look. Well, we definitely looked when we were shown the advertising that will be running in each of the markets where the tour will stop this year.

When one thinks of women’s plus size board shorts, the images of the ones wearing them might not be flattering. However, individuals who need to wear plus size board shorts will actually look much better in them, as they not only look more colorful and trendier, but also helps to give them a sportier and healthy appearance, which is not too bad at all. In short, unlike what some might think, wearing such apparel does more good than harm, and it is why it is hugely recommended and a very popular choice and decision for both ladies and men.

On Sunday 21 year old surfing sensation and reigning two-time ASP Women’s World Champion, Stephanie Gilmore of Australia , won the Roxy Pro Gold Coast, defeating Melanie Bartels, of Hawaii, to claim the first event on the 2009 ASP Women’s World Tour at Snapper Rocks in her home country.
Gilmore posted the highest wave score of the day on her very first wave with a 9.57 out of 10. She ripped it up with a series of fin releases and power carves.
“It was a really little wave,” Gilmore said. “I had a few flashbacks from 2005 where I was trying to pick off the little ones that were going to grow down the line. Today it just so happened I picked a good one. It is important to get a good start and get a lead early in the heat.”
Sunday’s victory was her 4th consecutive win on surfing’s ASP Women’s World Tour, having claimed the last three events of the 2008 season, and puts her well on the path to a third consecutive ASP Women’s World Title.
“It’s a new start for me,” Gilmore said. “To win on your home turf, in front of all these people, it’s unbelievable.”
We here at Buy-Board-Shorts.com know our customers and blog readers are also interested in surfing so we’ll be sure to keep you posted on other major surf contests and events!

As of today the women’s semifinals are on hold but yesterday the Roxy Pro Gold Coast was held in clean two-to-three foot waves at Duranbah Beach with the women surfers competing in three rounds of surfing before getting down to the semifinalists by the end of the long day.
Stephanie Gilmore, the reigning two-time ASP Women’s World Champion from Australia (show competing in her blue women’s board shorts above), was in sensational form today, beating Megan Abubo, of Hawaii, in Round 3 before ousting fellow Australian, Chelsea Hedges in the quarterfinals.
“It was a great heat with Chelsea (Hedges),” Gilmore said. “There was a lot of energy before we went down to the water and it just felt great. I love surfing with her, but it’s always hard. As I’ve said before, she’s probably the only girl I’ve ever competed against who can throw a 7 or 8 right back in your face at the start of a heat and it really fires me up. Of course, to come out on top is always a bonus.”
Gilmore is now into the Semifinals and looks to be the event favorite, securing the day’s high heat total of a 16.83 out of a possible 20 in her Round 3 heat.
“My last big result at home was when I was a wildcard at 17,” Gilmore said. “It’s always a treat to surf at home in front of your friends and family. Now that I’m through to the Semifinals, I’m feeling really good and hopefully, we’ll get to finish at Snapper Rocks.”
Gilmore will face 2009 ASP Dream Tour rookie Paige Hareb , of New Zealand, in Semifinal 1 when Roxy Pro Gold Coast competition continues.

Monday, March 2nd, the Roxy Pro Gold Coast women’s surfing event got off to a nice start in clean 2-3′ waves Down Under at Duranbah Beach.
The first of 8 events on the 2009 ASP Women’s World Tour, the Roxy Pro Gold Coast opted to relocate from the primary site of Snapper Rocks this morning to Duranbah Beach to take advantage of the better conditions, and with the swell forecast for the event window becoming a challege, the possibility of various venues looms large for the Roxy Pro Gold Coast.
Shown in her white rash guard and black board shorts, above, Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS), 18, 2009 ASP Women’s World Tour rookie, took command in a hard-fought Round 1 heat, scoring the highest heat total of the day, with an 18.77 out of a possible 20, to overtake Silvana Lima (BRA), 24, and Megan Abubo (HAW), 31.
“It was a good start to the event,” Fitzgibbons said. “I was really looking forward to competing up here on the Gold Coast. We were lucky we had a good heat for waves. I was just looking to get on a roll to push me through the whole event.”
Stay tuned for more from the Roxy Pro Gold Coast women’s surfing contest…
