Welcome To Buy-Board-Shorts

Hello and welcome to Buy-Board-Shorts.com!

We’re just a couple of surfers who got tired of paying outrageous prices for name brand board shorts just because they’ve got somebody’s name or logo on them.

We surf, we wear out our shorts and we want new ones… BUT we don’t want to pay $50-$75 for boardshorts so we can advertise for Quicksilver, Roxy and Billabong!

So we searched around and while we were vacationing in Hawaii we hooked up with a guy who manufactures his own line of board shorts making mens board shorts, women’s board shorts and even board shorts for kids. He doesn’t have a famous name or even a cool logo BUT he does have cheap board shorts and surf trunks that we wore, surfed in and loved so we decided it was a “go”.

We’re now part of the Discount Beach Gear Family of Stores where you can also pick up some awesome rash guard shirts to pair up with our board shorts before you hit the beach!

We’re just starting with a few styles and colors but rest assured that we will be adding more as our business grows so keep checking back. If you order something from us you’ll get a email blast once or twice a year so we’ll remind you to come back in case you forget. :-)

Welcome and thanks for shopping here at Buy-Board-Shorts.com – see you in the line-up!

Beachley hosts Surf Camp

World famous, 7-time ASP Women’s World Champion Layne Beachley has recently enjoyed hosting 11 of Australia’s future winning girls junior surfers in her own country’s surf training camp currently being presented at Surfing Australia’s High Performance Center in Casuarina, NSW.

Every attendee that went to her highly sought after training camp got their opportunity to meet the Queen of Surfing, as Beachley carved extra time away from her own hectic schedule to be able to surf, coach as well as mentor all the girls selected just for this exclusive camp. Of course the girls wore their womens rash guard shirts and women’s board shorts during their surf sessions under the intense sun.

Guests had been personally picked from her own particular state divisions to go to this all expenses paid 5 day training camp that was a scholarship effort developed by Surfing Australia, the Australian Sports Commission as well as the Illicit Drugs In Sport program.

The High Performance ciriculum was developed from the goal of building Australia’s finest rising jr . woman’s surfers to enable them to complete a easy cross over to being a professional surfer. “The great thing about the High Performance camps is that the participants are identified as future champions,” said Beachley.

Board Shorts Hit the Runway

Looks like the beach isn’t the only place boardshorts are showing up: last week they were seen parading down the catwalk at Fashion Week in New York in the G-Star Raw show.

While not as ‘traditional’ as one might think about boardshorts, they were none the less on stage in a venue you would never think they would be!

We here at Buy-Board-Shorts love to see men’s and women’s boardshorts break the traditional beach and surfer mold and into mainstream fashion. That’s because we wear our boardshorts and swim shorts EVERYWHERE.  :-)

Womens Board Shorts Hide Flab

Summer is here and for you women who don’t have the body of a model but still want to enjoy fun in the sun and hit the lake, beach or pool, our stylish women’s board shorts are just the thing you need to be wearing!

Our womens boardshorts are cut low to ride on your hips and cover your upper thighs, (unlike regular bathing suit bottoms).

Pair them up with a bikini top or rash guard shirt or wear them over your one-piece swimsuit and you’re stylin’.  :-)

Our women’s swim shorts run from size 3-15 and are cut wide to ride low so check ‘em out, grab a pair or two and get out there!

Beach Volleyball Ads Could “Spike” Attendance

The folks at the AVP, the professional beach volleyball league, know that the first key to drawing a crowd in this economic environment is to get people to look. Well, we definitely looked when we were shown the advertising that will be running in each of the markets where the tour will stop this year.

Plus Size Board Shorts

When one thinks of women’s plus size board shorts, the images of the ones wearing them might not be flattering. However, individuals who need to wear plus size board shorts will actually look much better in them, as they not only look more colorful and trendier, but also helps to give them a sportier and healthy appearance, which is not too bad at all. In short, unlike what some might think, wearing such apparel does more good than harm, and it is why it is hugely recommended and a very popular choice and decision for both ladies and men.

Gilmore Wins Roxy Pro

roxy-pro-gilmore1

On Sunday 21 year old surfing sensation and reigning two-time ASP Women’s World Champion, Stephanie Gilmore of Australia , won the Roxy Pro Gold Coast, defeating Melanie Bartels, of Hawaii, to claim the first event on the 2009 ASP Women’s World Tour at Snapper Rocks in her home country.

Gilmore posted the highest wave score of the day on her very first wave with a 9.57 out of 10. She ripped it up with a series of fin releases and power carves.

“It was a really little wave,” Gilmore said. “I had a few flashbacks from 2005 where I was trying to pick off the little ones that were going to grow down the line. Today it just so happened I picked a good one. It is important to get a good start and get a lead early in the heat.”

Sunday’s victory was her 4th consecutive win on surfing’s ASP Women’s World Tour, having claimed the last three events of the 2008 season, and puts her well on the path to a third consecutive ASP Women’s World Title.

“It’s a new start for me,” Gilmore said. “To win on your home turf, in front of all these people, it’s unbelievable.”

We here at Buy-Board-Shorts.com know our customers and blog readers are also interested in surfing so we’ll be sure to keep you posted on other major surf contests and events!

Roxy Pro Update – Semifinals on Hold

gilmore-roxy-pro

As of today the women’s semifinals are on hold but yesterday the Roxy Pro Gold Coast was held in clean two-to-three foot waves at Duranbah Beach with the women surfers competing in three rounds of surfing before getting down to the semifinalists by the end of the long day.

Stephanie Gilmore, the reigning two-time ASP Women’s World Champion from Australia (show competing in her blue women’s board shorts above), was in sensational form today, beating Megan Abubo, of Hawaii, in Round 3 before ousting fellow Australian, Chelsea Hedges in the quarterfinals.

“It was a great heat with Chelsea (Hedges),” Gilmore said. “There was a lot of energy before we went down to the water and it just felt great. I love surfing with her, but it’s always hard. As I’ve said before, she’s probably the only girl I’ve ever competed against who can throw a 7 or 8 right back in your face at the start of a heat and it really fires me up. Of course, to come out on top is always a bonus.”

Gilmore is now into the Semifinals and looks to be the event favorite, securing the day’s high heat total of a 16.83 out of a possible 20 in her Round 3 heat.

“My last big result at home was when I was a wildcard at 17,” Gilmore said. “It’s always a treat to surf at home in front of your friends and family. Now that I’m through to the Semifinals, I’m feeling really good and hopefully, we’ll get to finish at Snapper Rocks.”

Gilmore will face 2009 ASP Dream Tour rookie Paige Hareb , of New Zealand, in Semifinal 1 when Roxy Pro Gold Coast competition continues.

Shopping For Board Shorts

The popularity of board shorts, (also know as boardshorts, boardies, swim shorts or surf trunks), started with surfers and has spread to anybody who wants to dress in a hip, laid-back style of fashion. Even people who never go in the water or step foot on the beach are wearing and enjoying this cool style of shorts.

When you buy men’s board shorts keep in mind they have longer legs compared to most shorts. The legs come down to the knee or just above it. They’re cut to wear baggy and ride low on the hips.

Longer legs provide protection to surfers’ thighs and help keep them from getting rashes from their surfboard. The baggy cut provides room to paddle, jump up and maneuver on the waves.

Colorful patterns are typical along with Hawaiian themed prints. You can also find them in solid colors or just about any pattern you can imagine. Don’t be surprised if you see a buff, macho surfer wearing board shorts with colorful flowers on them. When it comes to men’s boardshorts it’s more colorful the better for some guys.

When you buy women’s board shorts they will typically have shorter legs that hit about mid thigh while some styles are similar to the men’s board shorts and hit above the knee. Also like the men’s they are cut to ride low on the hips and not up around your waist. Be sure so keep that in mind when shopping for women’s boardshorts as you may want to purchase a slightly larger size than you normally wear.

Women’s boardshorts come in a wide variety of colors, patterns and prints just like the men’s with maybe a bit more emphasis on female colors like pink or turquoise.

You can wear board shorts in the water by themselves, (women do need to wear a bikini top or bathing suit at most beaches), or pair them up with a rash guard to provide your skin with the ultimate in rash and UV protection that will stay on no matter how long you’re in the water.

Quality boardshorts will have reinforced seams that are usually triple-stitched for strength. Most come with a small Velcro pocket to hold your keys, cash or surfboard wax.

The standard closing is a Velcro fly with a tie or drawstring across the top. Most men’s board shorts do not have a mesh lining.

Last but not least, when shopping for boardshorts look for light, quick-drying material such as microfiber. Microfiber is commonly used to make board shorts because it is soft, light , provides minimal water repelling action and is quick-drying. What you don’t want are thick, heavy shorts that will bog you down and take forever to dry when you get out of the water.

Besides looking great and being totally stylish, men’s and women’s board shorts are comfortable and fun to wear even if you never get near the water!

Roxy Pro Gold Coast Coming Up

Stephanie Gilmore Roxy Pro 2008

The start to the 2009 ASP Women’s World Tour is less than two weeks from commencing and the world’s best surfers are gearing up for an assault on one of the world’s best waves, Snapper Rocks, host of the 2009 Roxy Pro Gold Coast presented by LG Mobile.

Pictured in her hot pink women’s rash guard and blue women’s board shorts above, Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 21, reigning and two-time ASP Women’s World Champion, will return to the singlet once again in 2009, looking to collect her third consecutive ASP Women’s World Title.

“Second time around, the title has definitely sunk in quicker and having experienced the process that follows winning a world title this time last year, I’ve really been able to enjoy the attention, rather than be overwhelmed,” Gilmore said. “This season feels great. After the celebrations settled down mid-January, everything is now completely fresh and I’m really utilizing my time at home to get stuck into some training and surfing the Snapper and D’Bah as much as possible.”

Despite possessing a wealth of local experience at her homebreak of Snapper Rocks, Gilmore’s track record at the opening event of the year has been less than stellar since claiming victory as a wildcard in 2005.

“Having bad results here the last two years hasn’t ever affected my year-end result so I’m quite at ease with the first event,” Gilmore said. “However, in saying that, not having done well here since 2005, I’m really going to push myself to be on top of my preparation and equipment, carrying nothing less than a win in my mind.”

Absent from this year’s competition will be former seven-time ASP Women’s World Champion Layne Beachley (AUS), 36, who announced her retirement from full-time competition at the end of last season. Even without the threat of a well-rounded veteran such as Beachley, Gilmore confesses that 2009’s rookie class will bring challenges of their own.

“I feel about 40-years older than the new rookies (haha),” Gilmore said. “But I think all the girls will put on some great performances at Snapper and create some exciting new rivalries within the tour. I think Sally Fitzgibbons will have a very mature, well-rounded approach to her rookie year. Coco Ho and Alana Blanchard will bring some upsets as well.”

Gilmore will face Rosanne Hodge (ZAF), 22, and the winner of the Roxy Pro Trials in Round 1 of competition when the Roxy Pro Gold Coast commences.

Sofia Mulanovich (PER), 25, defending Roxy Pro Gold Coast Champion and current ASP World No. 3, is excited to return to the Gold Coast and aims for a repeat performance to kick off her 2009 ASP Women’s World Title campaign.

“The gold coast is such a cool place and the waves there are super fun,” Mulanovich said. “It is for sure really important to start the year with a good result so I hope for a good result at Snapper.”

Mulanovich, who claimed her historic ASP Women’s World Title in 2004, has been a consistent Top 5 finisher ever since, but has yet to reclaim her place at the top of the ASP Top 17.
